Q: What is Chiropractic?

A: The word Chiropractic comes from the Greek words cheir (hand) and prakticos (practice). In other words, practiced by hand. Chiropractic is a drugless and non-surgical health care profession that restores balance and movement to the human body leading to improved function and improved health.

Q: What does that mean?

A: The human body is very similar to an automobile. It has a frame, ball joints, cables and pulleys. You have to put fuel into it for it to run, and you have to maintain it for it to continue running well. If a car is in alignment, with proper fluids, and proper maintenance, it runs well. It uses less gas and the ball joints don’t wear out. If it is out of alignment, is not supplied with proper fluids and fuel, it does not run well, it gets poor gas mileage and over time it begins to fall apart. If your body is out of alignment, is not well supplied with water and nourishment then you begin to fall apart. The Doctor of Chiropractic works to restore that alignment and educate the patient about how they can maintain it.

Q: How is Chiropractic different from medical treatment?

A: Chiropractic is about finding and treating the cause of the patients' symptoms rather than treating the symptoms themselves.

Q: Are x-rays required for treatment at Dr. Mock’s office?

A: Most conditions that present to Dr. Mock’s office do not require x-rays. However, if there has been trauma or other indications are noted during the history or exam, Dr. Mock may recommend them.

Q: Will I be treated on the first visit?

A: Typically the patient will be treated on the first visit. Sometimes the history or exam may suggest further diagnostic testing such as an x-ray study, an MRI, or CT scan. Occasionally the patient will need to be referred somewhere else for further work-up. Dr. Mock may also refer the patient to another type of provider should the patient’s condition not be a chiropractic case. That will be determined typically at the initial patient visit.

Q: What is the most important thing for a patient to do to get the best results from Chiropractic treatment?

A: The best results with Chiropractic care are achieved when the patient and doctor work as a team. The patient must actively participate in the outcome by following the doctor’s recommendations, showing up for their scheduled appointments, performing any home care activities the doctor prescribes, and realizing the patients condition is their responsibility and that they must own it in order to manage and recover from it. It is the combination of the treatment the doctor provides and the personal commitment the patient makes that leads to the best outcome for the patient.
